Jacket Care Basics: What to Check Before You Wash

There is no single washing routine that suits every jacket. Fabric, insulation, trims and finishes can require different treatment. The most useful first step is to read the sewn-in care label and any instructions supplied with your specific garment.

Read before choosing a cleaning method

Check whether the label permits machine washing, hand washing or professional cleaning. Follow the stated temperature and drying instructions. Do not copy a routine from another jacket simply because the two pieces look similar. If the label is missing or unclear, ask for clarification before washing.

Inspect and prepare the garment

Empty pockets and check for items that could damage the garment or washing machine. Look over seams, fastenings and stained areas. Follow the manufacturer’s guidance on closing zips, fastening hook-and-loop tabs and treating marks. Avoid trying an unfamiliar product across a visible panel without checking its suitability.

Pay attention to detergent and drying

Use only cleaning products and methods appropriate for the care instructions. Do not assume bleach, fabric softener, high heat or a tumble dryer is suitable. Likewise, do not assume every insulated jacket should be dried the same way. Allow the garment to dry fully by the recommended method before storing it.

Store with the garment in mind

Check the storage advice supplied by the manufacturer and choose a clean, dry place. Inspect the jacket periodically, particularly after damp weather or extended storage. A short check can help you spot a problem before the next time you need the garment.
